11-06-2011,

Well it has been a weird season. The fish are still coming in slowly so we are still picking up a few here and there. They never did come in large numbers as we thought they should. They just keep trickling in, a few here and a few there. The Coho season is still open. We have not hit our quota yet so you can still come and fish for Coho as well as Chinook. Pretty soon I will have to switch from Salmon to Steelhead fishing as that season starts pretty soon.

1 wild chinook per day and 10 for the season. Season to run from July 1st to December 31st.
1 wild Coho per day and 2 for the season. Season to run from September 15th until a quota of 1,200 fish have been harvested.

So come on down and lets get this season going and get your picture up on our site….

Good luck and let us know how you do. 503-368-5858
For the latest info call Jim at 503-368-5780 and he can give you the day to day statistics.

10-23-2011,

Still no change, fish at the bar and few coming in….

10-09-2011,

Well what in the world is going on. The fish are still sitting out side the jetty. I believe it is because the bar has been so rough that the fish don’t want to go through the sand that is being kicked up. We have had some rain so I would have thought the sent of fresh water would have done the trick. So as of now we still have not seen the fall Chinook or the Coho come in yet.. It could be a fast and furious couple of weeks. We are still open for Coho, but I think this will end soon.

10-2-2011,

The last week has shown signs of improvement as far as coho fishing is going. The Chinook fishing is still pretty slow with the fall run not coming in yet. We are getting some heavy rain in so this just might be what it takes to bring them into the bay. The jetty is still hot, The fish are just hanging there, so until they start to come in that will be the place to be.

  • 1 wild chinook per day and 10 for the season. Season to run from July 1st to December 31st.
  • 1 wild Coho per day and 2 for the season. Season to run from September 15th until a quota of 1,200 fish have been harvested.

9-25-2011,

The bay is still a little slow. I think it is because the jetty has been so rough that the salmon don’t want to go through the sandy water.

  • Hopefully we will see some more action this week after the rains slow down and weather turns for the better.
  • The jetty is still the place to be for fish, but not for the faint of heart. It has been churning and some fisherman have gotten sea sick..
  • When I last ask we were at about 3% of our coho allotment so there are still lots of fish to catch.
  • 1 wild chinook per day and 10 for the season. Season to run from July 1st to December 31st.
  • 1 wild Coho per day and 2 for the season. Season to run from September 15th until a quota of 1,200 fish have been harvested.

9-20-2011, The fishing has slowed down a bit in the bay, but is showing sighs of picking up. The Jaws have been hot…

  • The Coho starting to show up, remember as of the 15th you can keep natives per the ODFWs guidlines.
  • It just does not get any better, good fishing and low fishing pressure.
  • 1 wild chinook per day and 10 for the season. Season to run from July 1st to December 31st.
  • 1 wild Coho per day and 2 for the season. Season to run from September 15th until a quota of 1,200 fish have been harvested.

Fishing for the Whole Family

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

Especially with a young family, it can be challenging to include the oldest and the youngest and leave with everyone feeling fulfilled with a family outing. This is especially true with a family fishing where a twelve year old daughter may have more stamina and zest for fishing than her twelve year old brother, for example. One of the keys to making this type of outing successful is to have a location that offers varying levels of challenges, with an easy means for some family members to step away or take breaks. The same logic applies to many outdoor adventures, such as taking a day to enjoy the snow by skiing or tubing.
When fishing in Oregon, Wheeler on the Bay offers a perfect getaway location that meets the full spectrum of needs of a diverse family. Being located right on the water with our own private dock, and free kayak rentals (2n min), your family can easily enjoy access to the water for fishing, crabbing, or wildlife exploration at the perfect pace for your activity and level of enthusiasm. For example, if you own your own boat, you can moor for free on our dock and begin your day with the full family. If after an hour or so, the younger ones need a nap or are becoming fidgety, you can simple drop them (and a spouse or older child) off at the dock to head back to your room. They can then relax in your room and watch a movie or take a nap while you continue fishing. After the nap, it is quick and easy to pick them up to join you for the rest of the day.
Our private dock at Wheeler on the Bay, also makes it easy and convenient for you to take a break during the day, for lunch, to load up on cool beverages, or enjoy a restroom break. By enjoying our kayaks and your own boat, your family can enjoy more diversity in their Oregon fishing experience.

Oregon Fishing For Beginners and Pros

Sunday, April 17th, 2011

“Go where the fish are!”
Driving along the thousands of miles of Oregon scenic highways, you frequently see people fishing from their boats, and occasionally casting along a shoreline. Naturally, the thing to do is “go where the fish are!” So, how might one figure out where they are? And, what if they are in the middle of a lake or river or bay, requiring a boat? Fortunately, Oregon fishing is easier than other states and the Oregon department of fish and wildlife provides a fishing guide for beginners (http://www.dfw.state.or.us/fish/easy_angling/index.asp) last lists a few good spots with easy shore access.

Nehalem Bay might be one of the easiest places to catch fish with dozens of great spots to launch a boat, canoe, or kayak. The fishing and crabbing are some of the best you’ll find in Oregon with easy access too affordable lodging, restaurants and amenities.

Stay at Wheeler on the Bay Lodge and get FREE Kayak Rentals (2n min), and FREE Boat Moorage!

For beginners, we can help you connect with a local fishing guide, or join a drift boat party! For more advanced fishing with your own boat, enjoy complimentary moorage on our private dock while you lodge with us. We have a great outdoor BBQ grill to cook your fish, and we can help refrigerate and store your catch until you are ready to head home.

Nearly Year Around Fishing in Oregon
Chinook and COHO Salmon fishing is usually good from early June through mid-November. Steelhead (seagoing rainbow trout) fishing is usually open from early December through the end of March.

Our guests have stayed in many Oregon coast hotels and often share that their stay at Wheeler on the Bay is the finest experience thus far. We are thankful for their repeat business and look forward to meeting you on your first visit to our family owned getaway on the coast.

There are many fine Oregon coast hotels to the North in Astoria and Cannon Beach. There are also many fine accommodations to the South in Pacific City, and Depot Bay, for example. Yet, if you are in the area of Manzanita and Tillamook, Wheeler on the Bay offers perhaps the best accommodations you will find. And, if you’re further away, a little extra drive might be worth the trip. We love it here and think you will too.
